The Southern Historical Association was established in 1934 to promote the study of history of the American South and the teaching of all branches of history in the South. The collection includes officers' files and other materials pertaining to the administration of the Southern Historical Association, the historical profession, and related matters. Among individuals whose work with the Association is documented are James W. Patton, Bennett H. Wall, Sanford W. Higginbotham, and Gilbert Fite. Also included are records, 1982-1983, of the Association's Ad Hoc Committee on the Status of Women in the Southern Historical Association, of the European History Section, and of the .
